Meet Kim Freeman, Founder & Academic Director of MAS

“My area of expertise became the center of my world, when my son was diagnosed with autism at age 5.”

Helping families succeed is her passion and it’s personal. Her son was diagnosed with Autism at the age of 5. Through her research to find support—someone that would act as partner for her and her son, she realized there was a gap in the market of academia. What she needed was a personalized approach to education and learning that was tailored towards her son’s insufficiencies in school and at home. Kim is best-known for this holistic learning model, in which she imparts her distinct ability to connect with students and families, and then evaluate, assess and strategize out-of-the-box, individualized academic solutions resulting in success. Her approach encompasses all types of learners, and reaches outliers (children whose behavior issues or low self-esteem impedes learning) and children who may otherwise fall through the cracks.

“It’s a celebration when a child makes big improvements in school. But when a child finds the substance of who they are – for me, it’s profound, because that substance drives everything you do in life.”

-Kim Freeman, Founder MAS

Get To Know Kim

I’ve always gravitated towards children, especially those who need more when it comes to education. I am fascinated by how everyone operates so differently and love the challenge of exploring all elements of who a person is to find solutions just for them.  This is my gift – the specific way I’m able to connect with kids – typical and complex.

My own son, who is on the Autism spectrum, also played a significant role in why I created a business focused on believing in children’s potential.  MindKey Academic Solutions is a natural extension of my life’s path. It’s a privilege to help students unlock their brilliance, and to offer parents peace of mind so rarely found when seeking resources for their children.”

“It is so fulfilling to watch these kids achieve a-ha moments: when they realize they’re limitless; when they overcome challenges and acknowledge their own accomplishments. Those are the moments I am overflowing with pride, reward, and awe.

It’s amazing to see children step into their own empowerment, feeling supported with the right combination of attention and techniques. Parents and I are always struck by how drastically their child’s entire life improves because of the self-confidence and learning endurance they develop when we work together.”

“I design individualized / prescriptive learning programs to meet a student wherever they may be in their academic life. I developed a learning model to identify weak scholastic areas for strengthening and to reveal underlying factors silently hindering progress.”

Yes – my Spanish teacher. I took Spanish all four years of high school, more because of her than because of Spanish.  She was high-energy and so passionate. She’s what comes to mind when you picture someone whose job doesn’t seem like work – she was just doing what she loved. It was infectious. We couldn’t help but love her class and strive to do well, because she was teaching from such an authentic place.”

“Wonder Woman. I have always loved her. She has it all – beauty, brains, looks. She could do everything with total ease and grace. Wonder Woman s unstoppable, and totally disarming.  She can take you down without even breaking a sweat.”

Driven, creative, motivating, effective, compassionate.”

"I’ve known and worked with Kim for years - she is a consummate professional and offers unmatched expertise when it comes to supporting children to move forward. She is passionate and enthusiastic about education and feels it personally when her students win. Her commitment is unshakable, and it shows in how the students with whom she works make tremendous gains in very short periods of time. I would recommend her services to any parent with children who would benefit from tailored academic support. Regardless of the level of complexity each child’s scenario may present, she figures out how to penetrate and succeed every time."

“After working with several other tutors to help one of our middle school students successfully bridge the tremendous gap between grade level expectations and actual skills, we were fortunate to find Ms. Kim Freeman. Ms. Freeman, a reading specialist and student advocate, has been working with this student for almost a year. In that time, his reading fluency, comprehension and vocabulary have improved tremendously. When they first started working together, he was a reluctant reader and writer. Today he looks forward to meeting with Ms. Freeman, daily, and oozes with excitement when he speaks to me about the novels they are reading and the compositions they are developing. Ms. Freeman has a unique talent of balancing warmth and encouragement with structure and realistic expectations. She has brought out the best in this young man by holding him accountable and celebrating his successes. As a school, we are thrilled to partner with such a skilled and professional educator.”

“Our daughter, Sophie, is thriving in middle school and we know that this is due to her working with Kim Freeman at MindKey Academic Solutions. When Sophie was officially diagnosed dyslexic, we knew that this was not a game ender, but a game changer in her approach to school. We knew that she would need support not only in school, but it would take a consistent effort to help her learn how to learn, and how to work with her learning disability, not against it. When we started working with Kim, from the beginning, her approach was incredible. She understood that there are many different ways to learn, and she wanted to work with Sophie to discover what worked for her. She was very creative and patient in finding out where Sophie had deficits, and then employed various tools to help Sophie re-learn and move forward. Sophie always enjoys her learning lessons with Kim because she not only enjoys that Kim fills the time with various activities – games, yoga, art, writing, reading – but also Sophie is able to take these tools back to school, and they work for her! Through working with Kim, she began to see that she could do it, and we saw that she wasn’t struggling any longer to read. Recently, Sophie was in her room, reading a book on her bed, and both my husband and I marveled at the scene. Knowing the journey Sophie has been on, her ability to enjoy reading a book was a major accomplishment, and now it was a simple pastime choice for her. We are so grateful to Kim for making the gift of reading a reality for Sophie.”

Drawing on the challenges she has faced in her personal life as the parent of a child with Autism, Kim is articulate and passionate about her journey. A mesmerizing storyteller, Kim is able to draw the listener into her world, allowing them to feel and hear and touch her journey as if they, too, were part of her life. The audience is immediately struck by her intelligence, her courage and strength, which is bathed in her warmth, compassion and love for her children, her family and her incredibly positive outlook on life. “Kim Freeman is an amazing educator and human being. My son has been working with Kim for the past six years, and has grown significantly as a student and confident human being during this time. Kim works with a wealth of knowledge, and a very strong intuition, to get the most out of each of her students. While utilizing elements from a variety of widely-respected programs, Kim applauds her students for their strengths, and builds up their weaknesses. Kim sees uniqueness as a strength. She promotes learning strategies that allow students to succeed in school, while reinforcing their positive belief in their own abilities. My son has always had a Friday afternoon tutoring session. At no time throughout middle and high school has he asked to stop seeing Kim. He has absolutely seen the benefits that have come from working with Kim. As of today, my son has been accepted into five colleges, including nationally-ranked competitive programs. Kim is a very big part of this success.”
